Herbert Doms belongs to the circle of German theologians that in the first half of the twentieth Century contributed to the discussions on the teaching of the purpose of marriage. His book About the meaning and the purpose of marriage published 1935 in Breslau became an important work that proposed the distinction between the meaning and purpose of marriage and on this way opened new ways in Catholic theology towards an understanding of marriage. Doms worked out his understanding of marriage on the basis of his studies, research and publications in the field of natural sciences and his theological studies especially amongst scholastic thinkers.
